On Being Better Than Yesterday – To Do More, To Be Passionate

Posted on March 9, 2013April 23, 2013

Seth Godin imageLast week I was in NYC. I had the privilege of hearing one of the new thought leaders speak to a crowd of local media executives. While the topic of the conference was a little bit beyond my realm I have been following the speaker, Seth Godin, for quite a while.

His speech touched on how the old economy was based on a top down business model where everyone is a cog in the system and can be replaced at will. About how we are afraid to do more because if we do more, then our boss demands even more. It’s true. The safe way of living is to hold back a little bit. To have a little bit of breathing room.

But that’s not the new world or the new way of business.

Seth Godin argues that to survive in this new environment we have to always do more than is expected. We have to be passionate about what we are doing and we have to know that if we aren’t then someone else will be.

“More than you need to makes it personal”, he says in a recent blog post. “Because work that belongs to you, by choice, is the first step to making art.”

That is the way I approach my life and creative endeavors. There are a lot of people content with doing enough but I want to do more. I want to make every image and connection I create into something personal so my friends, clients and colleagues will remember.

Passion makes me happy and whole. Doing just enough doesn’t. The art that results will impact those around me.
