Nikon SLRs allow users to adjust the Auto ISO mode’s behaviour for moving or static subjects, and Panasonic cameras detect subject motion automatically. The EOS Rebel T7i / EOS 800D's new 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor performs very well. The Nikon D5600’s 39-point autofocus was one of its major selling points over the Canon EOS 750D, so Canon’s jump to 45 points is a big deal. With so much going for it, it’s frustrating that video capture is limited to 1080p. We’ve learnt to have high expectations of Canon SLRs’ image quality, and on the whole the 800D didn’t disappoint. In terms of exposure modes, the 800D is well served by a generous range of options including the standard PASM quartet for more experienced users, alongside Scene Intelligent Auto mode and 10 individual Scene modes (some of which can be selected directly from the Exposure mode dial) for point-and-shoot duties. How much this bothers you very much depends on the type of shooter you are, but even cheaper mirrorless rivals, such as the Panasonic Lumix GX800, incorporate 4K shooting (as does your phone, in all likelihood). We never, ever accept money to review a product. Featuring much of the same spec as the 800D, but in a slightly smaller body, the EOS 200D is an ideal option for anybody trying to keep their kit bag on the light side. For roughly the same price as the 800D and the kit lens, you can pick up Panasonic’s diminutive Lumix GX9. We use industry standard tests in order to compare features properly. Resolution was the clear standout, with the sensor returning an excellent set of images despite Canon’s decision to retain an optical low-pass filter. All rights reserved. I timed 0.3 seconds between shots when using the viewfinder, and 0.4 second in live view mode. Even more impressive was the 800D’s introduction of in-camera image stabilisation. If you're using an ad-blocker you might miss out on seeing the deals. How does it stack up against its main rivals? Tracking autofocus for fast-moving subjects is a big challenge for any camera, and the 800D is on the cusp of delivering reliable results. Of course, the T7i has a Rebel-class pricetag as well, where the EOS 77D is a little bit pricier (at least when first announced). ^ Canon’s usual knack for rich yet lifelike colours is on display here, and there’s masses of detail in the 24-megapixel file. It’s disappointing not to see 4K video on the EOS 77D, especially given Canon’s heritage in this area – and considering 4K video is becoming an increasingly standard feature at … The Clear View II TFT screen is of very good quality and displays captured images with great clarity, showing vivid colours and good levels of contrast while the camera is being used in Playback mode. In addition, the 800D also provides a range of in-camera lens-correction tools for minimising unsightly effects such as purple fringing and distortion, alongside the company’s longstanding Auto Lighting Optimizer tool to auto-correct image brightness and contrast. The sensor resolution remains at 24 megapixels but it now incorporates Canon’s Dual Pixel technology, which delivers significant improvements to autofocus performance when shooting photos in live view mode and for video capture. It’s particularly significant here, as live view is likely to be particularly popular with people upgrading from a compact or smartphone camera. Matrix metering from the 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor proves consistently accurate in all but the most extreme high-contrast situations, resulting in evenly lit images that are neither too dark nor too bright. Canon’s cheapest 4K camera is the EOS 5D Mark IV, but other manufacturers’ starting price for 4K is much lower. The Q menu works differently, and this inconsistency was the main source of my confusion. Canon EOS Rebel T7i / 800D review: features. As with resolution, our testing revealed quite a difference between in-camera JPEGs and manually processed raw images. The Canon is faster, particularly in live view mode, while the Nikon has a longer battery life. Of course, if you want to boost saturation then there’s a “Vivid” Picture Style to choose from, whereas if you’re looking for something flatter, the “Neutral” option will give you precisely this. This worked well but not brilliantly in my tests. Copyright © Dennis Publishing Limited 2020. The camera’s physical buttons and controls are all clearly labelled, well spaced and have a reassuringly responsive ‘clicky’ feel about them when pressed. The Regular setting can be used to counter basic handshake, while the latter is intended for use in more extreme circumstances. Canon EOS 800D review - sample images 1 / 16 There’s not a world of difference between the image quality from the 750D and the 800D, but, as usual, we’re treated to warm and vibrant colours which have a satisfying amount of pop. This is a major breakthrough for consumer SLRs, which up until now have failed to deliver a responsive shooting experience in live view mode. Canon claims that the Digic 7 is able to process data 14x faster than its predecessor, which not only enables the 800D to provide a higher maximum burst speed of 6fps (compared to 5fps on the 750D/760D), but also to fire off a higher number of consecutive images when burst shooting. Canon also provides a Touch Shutter function that takes things one step further by automatically capturing an image once the camera has attained focus on the chosen subject. Sometimes this worked to its advantage but other shots were slightly overexposed. The 800D is oblivious to subject motion. (1/25s, f/4.5, ISO 25600, 56mm equivalent). It isn’t a complete overhaul by any stretch of the imagination, but it did introduce Canon’s excellent Dual Pixel AF technology to the company’s entry-level DSLR models for the first time. White balance presets are easily available but — as with all EOS cameras — calibrating the custom white balance is unnecessarily convoluted. The latter is quicker but there’s a risk of inadvertently switching to a different autofocus mode. Switching to the 49-point Dual Pixel AF Live View system, the working range drops slightly from -2EV to 18EV. On the next page of this review, you will see how the T7i stacks up against other cameras on the market, including an in-depth image quality comparison with the Nikon D5600. We’re used to seeing subtle improvements with each update but the 800D makes some significant strides. However, for photographers who want to shoot the occasional video, the 800D’s reliability will probably be more valuable than the G80’s extra detail. This increases autofocus speed and accuracy in Live View, as well as when shooting video. Canon SLRs used to be dire for video autofocus, but thanks to Dual Pixel they’re now better than any other brand of SLR or compact system camera (CSC). (1/30s, f/3.5, ISO 2500, 32mm equivalent), ^ A passable snap at ISO 10,000. Keen videographers face a frustrating choice between superior details from the Panasonic G80 (for instance), superior autofocus from the EOS 800D or spending a lot of money for the best of both worlds. Find the latest drivers for your product. Burst speed is up from 5 to 6fps and the faster processor means it can save JPEGs as fast as it captures them. Even with the camera set to its “Standard” Picture Style setting, colours are deep and vivid, with good levels of contrast. Overall, the 800D produced a solid set of test results. My only minor gripe is that the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens can be quite noisy while focus is being adjusted. As a sacrifice, you get a slightly reduced burst shooting speed – but as neither this nor the 800D are speed demons, most users won’t notice the difference. Keen videographers face a frustrating choice between superior details from the Panasonic G80 (for instance), superior autofocus from the EOS 800D or spending a lot of money for the best of both worlds. More specifically, whereas the 750D/760D both used 19 cross-type AF points, the 800D inherits the same AF system used inside the EOS 80D, which benefits from 45 cross-type AF points across the central portion of the viewfinder. It still isn’t, but the EOS M50, Canon’s entry-level mirrorless model has it (albeit with limited applications). To date, the 800D remains in Canon’s line-up, but it some senses it has been superseded both by the smaller and lighter EOS 200D, and the mirrorless EOS M50 model. Features include a 24.2 megapixel sensor, super-fast focusing, 6 frames-per-second continuous shooting, Vari-Angle LCD screen, Wi-Fi connectivity. It also — in theory — improves the camera’s ability to track moving subjects around the frame. Nothing what it should look like. While this isn’t quite so apparent at ISO 100 and ISO 200, by ISO 400 the effects of in-camera noise control begin to produce a smearing of fine detail. Canon EOS 80D Review: Great DSLR for Video The Canon EOS 80D is a solid option for enthusiasts who want 45-point autofocus coverage along with excellent image quality, but it lacks 4K video. Like the EOS 800D, the EOS 77D uses a three-inch, vari-angle touchscreen display with a resolution of 1,040,000 dots. The later is a big improvement over the 750D, which took around one second in live view mode, and the, With so much going for it, it’s frustrating that video capture is limited to 1080p. Metering was generally accurate but the camera had a tendency to exposure for the darkest parts of the frame. Moving the autofocus point involves pressing a button and then moving the point using the four-way pad or the touchscreen. Each of these can be read separately, thereby allowing them to be used for phase-detection AF purposes. Another handy feature on the 800D is its Guided User Interface. The Canon 800D is built around a 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which you’ll also find in Canon’s more advanced EOS 80D (£840 body-only). Either way, that’s still pretty good and enables the camera to attain focus even in dim conditions. While JPEGs do display very low levels of noise all the way up to ISO 3200, the effects of in-camera noise reduction led to a noticeable loss of fine detail. didn’t excel in any particular area but a generous set of features, a sensible price and a consistently high quality added up to a camera that was perfect for home users looking for a proper camera. And because it's a DSLR you'll love its bright optical viewfinder that shows the world as it really is. With a bit of practice it’s not too hard to avoid this. Both offer excellent photo and video quality, with Nikon taking the lead for photos and Canon producing more accomplished videos. While JPEGs returned decent enough results, I found that using Adobe Camera Raw to sharpen raw images ourselves yielded better results. Likewise, Automatic White Balance also serves up consistently accurate colour. You can pick up the 750D for a cheaper price, but for the extra cash you get a better sensor, newer sensor, and better autofocusing – all things which are almost always definitely worth paying for.
